A life remembered by everyone she touched.

Pilsen · Chicago · Day 385
Who she was, in her family's words.
Marcela Herrera was born on a sunny day, October 7, 2002, in Cuautitlán Izcalli, Mexico. As a six-month-old baby she came to the United States and grew up in Gage Park, Chicago. She became a Montessori teacher, and was the second oldest of six siblings.

Marcela was the second oldest of six. She loved throwing surprise parties, FaceTiming them every day, and finding inspiration for her music in their playlists. She was the first to pour into their cups even when hers wasn't full — advice, treats, trips to their favorite spots. She made anything and everything possible for her babies.

Part-time teacher,
Music was where Marcela came alive. She sang every chance she got — in the kitchen, with her friends, anywhere there was a melody to chase.

Marcela was passionate about organizing community events for families in Chicago's southwest neighborhoods. In 2024 she co-led holistic mental health workshops, planned a Día de los Muertos event, and facilitated teach-ins for children — teaching them to be stewards of their own communities.

Family was everything to Marcela. A quinceañera, a baby shower, or just a Sunday together — she showed up with her whole heart and made sure everyone felt held.

Her family made a full tribute for her, with more photos and her music.
